The problem with QCOM is there are still a lot of love for people who got in early and hold on for the past decade hoping its growth story will continue. Its growth story has happened and finished. Time to move on...

QCOM turn into a gorilla when Ericsson sign the deal in 1999.
3G happened and QCOM made its mark.

This is my guide for investing in a gorilla and a reminder to never fall in love with any stock especially technology.

IBM: Mainframe -> mini computer and PC. INTC/MSFT the winner

INTC/MSFT -> Mobile phone. NOK dominated with GSM
NOK (GSM) -> QCOM's CDMA when Ericsson signed the agreement in 1999.

QCOM -> 3G CDMA happened. Unfortunately, CDMA is being displaced by WCDMA and QCOM has to compete just like everyone else... You know QCOM totally lost its gorilla position when Verizon announced it is going with LTE which force QCOM to shelf EDVO release C or whatever it calls its next gen CDMA (UMB?).

In addition, Apple screw up QCOM's plan of domination with vertical integration of Iphone OS/Itunes and not using any QCOM chipset. QCOM chip set with BREW would be a killer combination.
Unfortunately, QCOM missed it busily building FLO, mirasol, etc...See how fast Google is replicating Apple with Android?
What's QCOM doing???

What's the deal with Apple doesn't pay any licensing fee for QCOM? My guess is that QCOM was hoping to get Apple as a customer.

I was thinking QCOM would nailed Apple as customer with Snapdragon until I learned about PA Semiconductor that Apple has acquired. With the A4 chip that Apple is using for IPAD, QCOM's hope of getting Apple as customer is gone unless Apple decides to do CDMA/GSM world phone. The question is, if Apple announce the world phone, do I want to own QCOM or do I want Apple...

For the past decade of holding a tiny amount of QCOM left over from the spike of 1999, I am glad that I didn't buy back any.
The management keep giving guidance up and down like a yo yo and always paint a pretty picture of its business no matter what. This past January fiasco is a typical of its management behavior. They should just shut up and execute and let the result speak for itself like Apple.

Enough of this ranting... This post is for my kids to read when they are ready for the investing world.
