That makes more sense than the poor people in the US having more kids.

In primitive countries that rely heavily on subsidence farming, having extra kids can improve your economic situation. The provide labor for the farm, or whatever other back breaking work you need to do to survive, and they are your retirement plan, you count on them to support you when you get older, you won't have government retirement programs or a 401K. Also with high infant and child mortality, you have more kids to ensure that you do have some kids that survive to support you later.
