I disagree that they compromised their image. They didn't handle it perfectly but that shouldn't be the standard they are judged on. I think they handled it as well or almost as well as could be reasonably expected. There where cases of opponents to the bill acting like jerks or idiots, but your always going to have such cases in major controversial issues.
