There where cases of opponents to the bill acting like jerks or idiots, but your always going to have such cases in major controversial issues.

Sure, there will always be individual jerks. It seems to me that there are two important considerations here when passing judgment on a party. One is critical mass--the ratio of jerks to statesmen. The other is what the party did to rein in the jerks. My judgment comes from failure on both counts.
