Some Republicans can't tolerate an anti-war position within the party. What happened to the big tent?

Ron Paul actively tried to scuttle Ronald Reagan's candidacy

I don't recall that. Do you have the details? In 1988 the Libertarian Party approached Paul and begged him to run. At the time it looked like AIM activist Russell Means might get the nomination, he had amassed a large bloc of delegates to their convention who said they would support him. Means was fond of campaigning in full Indian regalia and liked to brag that he had taken up arms against the Federales at Wounded Knee and lived to tell about it. The more level headed party members did not want Means to be their nominee so they scrambled at the last minute and recruited Paul. I think he did it as a favor to them.
