Some reader comments on the Tampa website...

tampabay.com

<<...Now will someone wake up to the hazards of off shore drilling. Our beaches, fishing and tourism is fragile enough now. Seek alternative fuel like the solar power farm in central Florida. We can't afford to have a spill on our shores and in our waters...>>

<<...you are correct that President Obama has always stated that he would approve some limited oil drilling. This recent reinforcement of his stand on oil drilling was done for political gain. He is trying to get support for a very comprehensive energy bill that has real solutions in it but is obviously not going to help the oil companies make more money. Some people call it compromise. Everything happens for a reason - having this unfortunate incident happen on Earth Day? This is a message coming from someone way higher than our President...>>

<<...Hopefully this will cause Mr. Obama to reconsider this compromise. This can and will happen again. The only jobs created by allowing more drilling closer to our coasts will be cleaning beaches and trying to scour oil off seabirds--Oh I forgot, that's almost always handled by volunteers...>>

<<...More oil is not the solution. Investing more into a resource that is not our future makes no sense. The only reason drilling appeals to some Americans is because oil companies (that have invested billions in infrastructure) have spent a fortune lobbying and marketing their trade. Americans fail to realize that CHEAP gas prices are responsible for our Country's current decline in the global economy. If gas wasn't so cheap, people would use cars less, would likely own less cars, and we would have developed alternative technologies and comprehensive public transportation (like Europe). Cheap oil is like crack. Americans are addicted to it, and care not for the consequences of daily use. Just because it is what we have always known doesn't mean we shouldn't question if it is the right or wrong thing to use. We NEED oil for air travel and materials. We don't need it to drive locally. Plus, what a waste of time to drive on the highway long distances. I'd rather take a drive on train...>>

<<...This is a perfect example of why we should not be drilling in the gulf, especially near the coast of Florida. I am a Republican, but I will not support any candidate who is in favor of drilling off of our coast...>>

<<...Call or email your senator/representative and tell then you do NOT WANT OIL DRILLING off of our coast. We do not want our beaches ruined and wildlife killed because the oil executives want to make more money. Oil independence can be achieved by developing alternative energy sources starting with solar and wind...>>
