If gas wasn't so cheap, people would use cars less, would likely own less cars, and we would have developed alternative technologies and comprehensive public transportation (like Europe). Cheap oil is like crack. Americans are addicted to it, and care not for the consequences of daily use. Just because it is what we have always known doesn't mean we shouldn't question if it is the right or wrong thing to use. We NEED oil for air travel and materials. We don't need it to drive locally. Plus, what a waste of time to drive on the highway long distances.
