Uh, Tim, it is really the only thing that works long term. If interests strongly diverge for the long term, war generally crops up sooner or later. Read a history book sometime.

I guess all of those little proxy wars that marked the Cold War era never happened, then. Phew! That is a relief.

Or, are you talking about direct engagement? True, that was a dissuading factor. A very big one. But, times have changed. Russia, as currently constructed, cannot dream of taking on the world over Western Europe. Without that, strategic nuclear weapons are bordering on useless. Things like Prompt Global Strike means that we no longer have to hold cities hostage.
