Glass Steagal didn't regulate derivatives. It dealt with separation of different types of banking.

Not having extensive or highly active regulation for every type of financial investment or for of speculation, doesn't even vaguely resemble being "left alone".

The regulation after the Great Depression broke the boom/bust cycle that got well established during the 1800s.

The regulation and intervention during (and including trade barriers before) the Great Depression, where a major reason why it was a Great Depression.
