Unsustainable is right. And it's everywhere. 3 former top employees in my town of about 20,000 were accused of stealing money and other items, value less than $10,000, and were fired 3 years ago. The cases dragged on for some time and have finally been settled. Turns out that because the town does not have a “use it or lose it” policy, it's agreed to pay 2 of them (a husband and wife) $123,146.08 of the $158,146.08 the town allowed them to pile up in unused time off. One was paid for 144 vacation days and 140 sick days(!). The other was paid for 47 vacation days and 139.5 sick days. (The 3rd had some vacation time and 116.5 sick days, worth $51,878.64.)

All three have been rolling over the unused time from year to year since they began working for the town in the 1970s. And the town has a budget gap of $10.1 million for the coming year! No wonder. Will the selectmen change this policy? They should, but unless the public starts screaming, they probably won't.
