I think some of the opposition to the national ID card, involves the thought (however likely or unlikely such a thing might be in reality) that you would be required to have one, or maybe even to carry one. Sort of the same requirement for non-citizens (that generally isn't enforced until maybe just recently in AZ) imposed, and possibly enforced on citizens.

Which is not to say I necessarily want an optional national ID card, which people start expecting to see, sort of a national equivalent of the drivers license, except that you don't need one to drive; but such a prospect isn't exactly frightful either.
