You have to also remember that:
What Jesus approved of, did, said, didn't do, didn't say is NOT REALLY KNOW:
1.) He never wrote anything down.
2.) We have no way of knowing who finally DID write it down and how capable all the interem storytellers were for proper transmission of the information.
3.) Once it WAS written we have NO WAY of knowing how many times it was changed and by whom and for what reason.
You MUST (IMHO) read the bible with Jesus great commandment in mind... then you can see what makes sense... and what is poppycock. Futther if you DO that, and take it to heart... you don't even need read the old testament. (JMO)
FURTHER... and MORE TO THE POINT as far as Christianity is concerned, the OLD TESTAMENT (and the book of Revelations) has the same problems x 10 (my guess)...it's not clear WHY it was included in the bible, and by whom, what was left out, and why, AND the original authors are NOT Jesus... in some cases they may be dubious characters, and their message the same... according to what is written today...
You listen to ANY loudmouthed often hateful biblethumping emotional basket case preacher on TV and what do you hear? Mostly Old Testiment, eye for an eye, punishment, blood and burning... and book of revelations (more of the same)... all emotionally delivered to whip up the crowd. Just like Elmer Gantry.
