Charlie Crist Leaves GOP, Florida to Revive Senate Hopes by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace
(2010-04-29) — Hammered in the polls in recent weeks by Republican rival Marco Rubio, Governor Charlie Crist announced today that he’ll continue his run for U.S. Senate outside of the Republican Party, and outside of Florida.
“I’m not going to let my political future be decided by a bunch of misguided Republicans and Floridians,” Gov. Crist reportedly told major donors in a series of hasty phone calls. “The failure of these people to appreciate how intensely popular I am cannot hinder my aspirations to become even more so.”
Rumors had run amok lately that Gov. Crist would either go Independent or would join with Sen. Arlen Specter, D/R/D-PA, to form a third party comprised of right-wing Democrats, leftist Republicans and Independents committed to indecision.
Meanwhile, Crist associates downplayed the significance of his departure from the state, noting that it was merely “a change of venue so Charlie can get a fair trial in a state where there has been less negative publicity.”
“If there are states willing to take Gitmo prisoners,” one Crist friend noted, “certainly one of them will put Charlie on the ballot for Senate.”
Although, Gov. Crist recently pledged to Fox News reporter Chris Wallace that he would run as a Republican and would back the winner of the U.S. Senate primary, aides say that the governor had “spoken under duress after particularly grueling tanning session.”
