i know it's not new news but I saw this yestereday and wondered if there is something new....

"Intel's intent, from my viewpoint, is to own the motherboard, and slowly migrate all
the most common interface boards onto the motherboard. This is similar to
Microsoft's strategy of owning the operating system and blending everything into it
(i.e. the Internet browser). As they say, embrace your friends, but embrace your
enemies harder. (Or something like that anyway.) It also makes Intel more profit to
sell a full motherboard than just a chip. PC makers are more than happy to deal with
fewer suppliers, assuming the price is held down and the quality is there.

That's why Intel is buying Chips and Technologies. They want to bring the graphics
chipset onto the motherboard. CHPS was also big in laptops, and I think Intel views
the future as a portable PC with an integrated screen. I believe that is also why Intel
is challenging 3Com Corporation in the network adapter space. They want to bring
the network adapter onto the motherboard, and make it just another port."
