I'm not sure I'm shocked that everyone, even smart and well educated professionals, are so ignorant on the subject. What bothers me more is that no one calls them on it.

I think it is really a shame. My daughter just finished her Ph.D. and I was surprised to hear that some in her class were actually "hiring" graduate statisticians for work on their dissertations. I had never realized that was even a possibility. When queried further she revealed that in her program there were no requirements for coursework in statistics, either prior to entry or during. I found that to be very, very strange.
