But Obama is in charge now, and so the public's assessment of the outcome in the gulf will inevitably become an assessment of his performance.

It will be a referemdem (sp) on BP and the fact they have no daym clue how to stop it. and on the all the people who allowed them to drill a well they had no clue how to stop gushing if things went wrong. hope for the best, and plan for the worst.

I wasn't concerned when O agreed to drilling. it had to be done in this enviroment, but would it ever have happened? I think not. it was simply a ploy.

As to cleaning up the disastrous lax stuff re coal mining and offshore drilling brought on by years of Bush and years of disinterest by most Americans, sometimes it takes a tragedy to wake people up. No way even many big enviro people would push... seriously, how many wonderful leftie enviro folks are marching in the Appalacians to stop strip mining and the destruction of streams? not many. and how many care about offshore drilling for any reason but they care about fishies? not about the fisherfolk who will lose their livelihoods because of this... nooooooooooo, they care about the lil fishies. there are connections to be made, but people driving their cars on the oil brought in from the gulf, the oil now set to ruin the lives of distained rednecks, talk talk talk. there are connections to be made with the Appalacian miners who die young from black lung and accidents, but too many who decry 'dirty coal' turn on their lights given by that coal and dispice the redneck miners.

Obama can make this work for the nation. but some on the 'left' want Obama to make grand sweeping statements that will please them while the bodies of the dead are still warm and the people who depend on the waters for their living are praying simply to make it through this. I'm glad Obama seems to have a little more taste than to say certain things while the bodies are still warm.

there won't be anymore deep wells ever or until technology to cap any such event as has happened has been demonstrated and proven. as to how people in the ritzy places on the coast (which is not the gulf coast), I don't care about their view.
