Why not just cause the roughly 50 % of the population who pay no fed income tax to pay some share and eliminate the tax credits that give money to people who never paid in?

We are talking a huge number of people and households.

It would be a direct way of letting everyone know what it costs to fund the federal government and it is not so sneaky or regressive as a VAT.
