Countries like Canada and Norway have much higher taxes on gas and it hasn't hurt their economies...and both Canada and Norway have a lot of oil (considering the total amount they consume as a country). The United States has kept the price of gasoline artificially low for way too many years. The Federal and State governments need the extra revenue and new gas taxes would help fund some major green technology infrastructure projects that are long overdue.
