If we can spend over a trillion U.S. tax dollars on an elective war over in Iraq why can't we launch a Manhatten project to get our country off oil and coal ?? It won't happen overnight but the leadership must come from the White House. Look how John Kennedy motivated the best and brightest minds to find a way to get our country to the moon. We don't see that kind of national commitment to build a totally new national energy grid do we...?? That's true energy security. Drilling for more oil in our backyard is only a stopgap solution that isn't working out too well right now -- it's clear that we will need to use some oil and coal for at least another 20 years...but we could have stronger conservation efforts and we could more carefully regulate the way we drill for oil offshore and the way we mine for coal. It's becoming clear that our current environmental safeguards are not adequate. We don't get another planet and we can't trade this one in.
