With BP's spotty safety record why were they approved to do very risky ultra deep water drilling in the Gulf...?? And why did the regulators let them use Halliburton to do the all important cement work for the undersea well...?? And why wasn't BP required to use an acoustic switch, which is activated from off-site when a platform is damaged and the primary shut-off system doesn’t work..?? Norwegian companies have used the system on almost all its offshore drills since 1993, and it is effectively required by Norway and Brazil. All these things should have been explored BEFORE BP was granted the permits to drill in the Gulf. Everyone should have known that the stakes were very high and the threshold for approval should be much higher than normal. Big Oil's lobbyists work overtime to reduce regulations and oversight (and that happened big time during the Bush/Cheney years)...But did things change dramatically in the last year with a new Administration in power...??
