The BOP stack has multiple layers of redundancy. It's easy to see how BP assumed it could never fail. A bad mistake to make, that may lead to bankruptcy. The thing is, that well was newer and better than the vast majority of wells under the ocean. How many other operations have just as lame a response planned as BP? Oil is going to get more expensive.
