Right now the spill amounts are just guesstimates. For comparison, Mexico's 1979 Ixtoc I blowout in the Gulf of Mexico spewed an estimated 10K-30K bpd for 9 months. Australia's 2009 Montara blowout leaked 400-5,000 bpd for 3 months.

BP hopes to deploy the underwater collection domes in a week or so. If those work, the amount of oil collected can be measured.

It will be interesting to see how this disaster affects the future of deep water drilling, particularly Brazil's pre-salt. At a minimum we'll see higher costs for insurance and safety equipment. But if we get more of these blowouts, it could seriously affect the future of ultra-deep drilling.
