After reading the item, I do not agree that the BOPs are unable to shot off fully because of the backpressure from the gushing of the fluids from the bedrock. It is a poorly designed system.

There are several ways the design can be improved and I think this is not where we can discuss them all. Now, they have have designed these already into the system and the post does not elaborate them. But I can tell you that in the process control industry, such situations arise very often and there are fail safe systems designed with features such as baffle walls, power positioning valves etc. that can shut against the forces of 6000 psi plus pressures.

The oil industry needs to spend money money in these systems. And to force them to do so we need to bring in the regulatory plowers such as they do in the biotech/pharma industry through the FDA.

I do not see any reason to stop oil drilling once we come up with such triple redundant, wel designed safety systems. Until then it is OK to suspend drilling.
