Over100K barrels were spilled in 1990 from a Norwegian tanker 57 miles SE of Galveston. What happened to the oil? It mostly got burned up and hardly any reached the beach.

Ixtoc 1 was did far less damage than we were led to believe it would as well.

Comparisons with the Valdez spill seem to me to be premature, since apparently, the sheer amount of oil spilled isn't the sole determinant of how "bad" the spill actually is. IN the case of Ixtoc 1, which took 9 months to cap, most of the oil ended up sinking out in the middle of the Gulf somewhere. Or something like that.
