Steel pipe basically - high strength but flexible: tenaris.com tenaris.com May be sheathed by polymer or carbon fiber material layers: This is getting beyond my knowledge. Never heard of a problem with whales or subs - ??? Long things made of steel are flexible - buildings/bridges/towers sway and the same is true here.
