This could turn out to be another case of environmentalists wackos going nuts before it is justified by the facts.

Nothing new about this.

Of course, the spill looks really, really bad. After all, it is probably more oil than Valdez by now, right? But the fact is the sheer quantity of oil isn't he entire story, or even the most of the story.

It could get bad. Or it could be a relatively unimportant spill.

We saw this with Carl Sagan during the Gulf War, stupidly predicting a kind of "nuclear winter" if Saddam fired up the oil wells. He did, and there wasn't.

The jury is out on this and you'd have to be a fool not to give more thought to the effects of offshore drilling and how to make it safer after this. But it is not a cataclysmic event just yet.
