While WCDMA and CDMA 2000, each with about 500 million users around the world, are developing toward LTE, large-scale commercial applications of the 4G standard will begin in 2014 when the technology is mature and terminal devices are inexpensive, according to VP of Technology Jou Yu-chuen for Qualcomm.

However, Asia Pacific Consulting Director CW Cheung for Ovum holds an outlook that large demand for voice-enabled LTE terminal devices will begin in 2012 and in the interim LTE will be used through external modems and embedded in notebooks. There will be 10 million LTE handsets sold globally in 2012, Cheung cited an Ovum forecast as saying.

Asha Hemrajani, Taiwan and Hong Kong Head of Strategy and Business Development for Nokia Siemens Networks, indicated LTE will reach a milestone global user base of 100 million as early as 2014.
