I'm not sure if the government ever declared itself atheist, but I do know they closed most of the churches and converted them to public uses..they didn't allow religion in government... The Catholic churches, Roman and Greek, were and still are a very powerful political voice in Eastern Europe....They essentially ruled that world. Poland, I believe, even has an official religion, ie RC..... No government can force someone to believe something they don't want to believe....that's why Christians and other religions start the indoctrination at a very early age... Easter Europeans are still predominantly Catholic...
