The jury is out on this and you'd have to be a fool not to give more thought to the effects of offshore drilling and how to make it safer after this. But it is not a cataclysmic event just yet.

I agree. I think in the end this will be contained and will be much less of disaster than the media is currently predicting.

I think the takeaway for me is that I, for one, had been lulled into a state of complacency when it comes to the rigs. After all, they have come through numerous hurricanes without spilling very much oil. However, we are learning it only takes one major spill to gum up the works. In the future, I think the rigs must employ all the safeguards that technology allows at the present time. There can be no cutting of corners.
