It's not normally necessary.
The next step would be to run your hard drive's manufacturer's diagnostic. If you don't know hat brand your hard drive is...

Right Click Computer in Start Menu or desktop
Click Proerties
Device Manager
Expand Disk drives

Then Google the brand name plus the word diagnostic or go to the manufacturers homepage to find it or post back the brand then me or someone else could point you to the diag..
