I think it may be premature to assume you're having a hard drive failure just because your computer is slow, although it could be, so important for you to backup.

Try this; right click on your drive (usually "C"); select properties; on the Tools menu in the error check tab click check now; be sure to check both selections; automatically fix system file errors; scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This could give you a bit more info on a drive failure occurring, or bad sectors
