CC, his point is well founded in the article.
There are problems with this idea that are the same problems at work with BCB's idea of crimping the riser.

1) Flowing pressure past the BOP stack is huge. I've no idea of the numbers involved here but >5,000 psi is common. If you pinch down on that pipe, this pressure goes up exponentially until/if it is closed.

2) Imagine the weight of a column of oil one mile high. It is huge. This weight from above the ruptures will be fighting against the flowing pressure from below them. There would have to be an almighty seal at the base of the new conduit to overcome these forces and maintain a seal. Perhaps having that rusty box sink up to its "wings" will be enough.

Maybe they will be using a pump system on the ship to draw the oil up.
So many questions still.
