I thought that what that paper lacks most is modesty. Differential splicing is old news as you've noted and I'm not yet convinced that what they've deciphered is truly the alternative splicing code and that it has biologically functional meaning. For now I regard this story as some clever mathematicians designed algorithms for predictions and try to convince the world that it can be considered as an additional genetic code.
