In my opinion, apart from his first two years in office, he was a very poor Chancellor, who left us with an unsustainable level of debt (only a relatively small portion of which can be attributed to the bank bailout), and an even more unsustainable deficit (over 12% of GDP, around 10% of which is structural).

It's also fair to give him some credit for keeping a level head during the meltdown.
I think that one of the reasons the US and UK reacted better to the crisis than did the Europeans, is that banking is a much more significant part of our economies - and has much more influence on, and dialogue with government. Right now that's not such a good thing (blocking needed reform), but at the time, it was providential.

And no, the Labour MPs putting their heads above the parapet are not particularly significant, for now. And unless Brown throws in the towel, there is no easy way for even a united Labour party to remove him quickly.

My best guess is that the Conservatives (most of whom have very little in common with your Republican party) will negotiate some sort of a deal with the Liberal Democrats. I'd give odds of at least 2:1 in favour of that happening.
