Canadian black flies are like small crows with a vicious appetite and sharp teeth. I have never seen so many mosquitoes as trying to get through the mesh of our tent one evening in Sudbury. I put my hand flat on the mesh, fingers outstretched, and moved it slightly while they all landed, then took my hand away and there was a black layer where my hand and fingers had been. They couldn't bite because the mesh fibres kept bumping their proboscis as my hand moved.

I would NOT have wanted to be outside unprotected.
