Asia-Pacific PC shipments rise 23 pct in 3Q -IDC SINGAPORE, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Shipments of personal computers grew 23 percent in the third quarter of 1997 compared to the same period last year, research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) said on Thursday. IDC said in a statement shipments from the region, excluding Japan, hit 2.65 million units during the period, despite a slowdown in Southeast Asia, where a currency crisis slowed growth. "The PRC (China) continued its pattern of exceptional growth by producing a 41 percent year-over-year growth rate," IDC said. It said China accounted for 29 percent of the regional market in the quarter. South Korea and Australia were the next biggest markets and grew by 14 percent and 10 percent respectively. India, the fourth largest market, generated the highest growth rate of 51 percent, IDC said. International Business Machines Corp (IBM) (IBM) led the market for the fourth quarter in a row with a 7.4 percent share, but that was down from 8.5 percent in the second quarter, it said. Compaq (CPQ) was second with a seven percent share, followed by South Korea's Samsung (64050.KS) with a 6.6 percent share. Acer (ACER.SI) was fourth with a 5.7 percent share, ahead of Hewlett-Packard (HWP), which had a 4.3 percent share. o~~~ O |
