Bill, yes, the Portuguese left next to nothing in Timor - and nothing with which the Timoreses could repell the Indonesian invasion. However, given that nobody cared that the Indonesians invaded (November 1975) and almost nobody cares today - it was perhaps better that the Timorese didn't have anything more than old rifles to fight the Indonesians - it is a case of David and Goliath there, a couple of million people versus 160 million. My country sold East Timor down the drain at the time, and the major powers such as the USA acquiesced, and still do, to the Indonesian takeover and supression of the Timorese.
