Israel usually targets civilians and civilian infrastructure, occasionally they target the military.
The Israel that exists in your distorted visions perhaps.
If they really where targeted civilians as the primary targets, the death toll among Palestinian civilians would be far higher. At the same time the death toll for the Israeli military would be noticeably lower, since they wouldn't have to expose themselves to any risk to lower civilian casualties. Instead of invading Palestinian cities, towns, and camps, they could simply carpet bomb them.
Likud is obviously more closely connected to Israel than Hamas is connected to Palestine. Perhaps, but that's irrelevant. The statement that Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel is a statement about Hamas, not about Palestine. The statement about Likud on the other hand was presented as a statement about Israel, and once again Likud != Israel.
Also it was Ariel Sharon (who was in Likud at the time) who ordered the "disengagement"/pull back from Gaza.
As for Hamas and negotiation, they have no intention of actually bringing anything to the table, they want control over all of Israel/Palestine. Negotiations might serve a PR purpose, or might delay some Israeli action, or if they achieve some actual partial temporary agreement they might give Hamas more recognition, but they won't bring about peace.
Negotiations are not an end in themselves. Without sufficient common ground between the sides, they are often pointless, and can actually be counterproductive. |
