The Pope is acknowledging that if the Church didn't do anything wrong, then it's enemies among homosexuals, atheists, pro choice advocates, gay marriage advocates and others on the left would have no ammunition to attack it. It is taking responsibility for its own problem.
However, that does not mean that its enemies aren't spinning, lying, misleading, being biased, looking the other way when it comes to similar problems elsewhere, holding the actions of men decades ago to the standards of today's knowledge etc.. to maximize the damage.
These two facts are not mutually exclusive.
Both are correct.
The difference is that virtually no one I am aware of ever totally denied the problem (perhaps other than a few rogues and ignorant old men) but many have denied the second in the face of statistics, clear evidence of the use of misleading terms, bias, and the historical record of how cases were handled by others etc... |
