With that statement Obama was right for once. We went decades with thousands of rigs in the gulf without a spill before we had this one. They generally don't cause spills. Even without any increases in safety equipment and procedures (and I expect they will improve as a result of the accident, and would do so even without any additional regulation), we would likely go for decades more before the next spill.

Of course the timing of that statement doesn't work out well for Obama. Its possible to make a true statement and still have events make you look foolish, which is the case here. That's look foolish rather than actually be foolish (not that I'm saying he isn't foolish, but the foolishness is with his other policies and ideas, not this particular statement).
