No small child should ever be told or led to believe the culture they depend on for nourishment, protection, comfort and safety is evil, or not concerned about their best interests. They don't have the abstract thinking skills to be able to process the cognitive dissonance or the emotional maturity to deal with it even if they could. ---------------- Kindergartener coming out of a school in America. Hi, guess what? Hugs first ... Ok, now what sweety? Did you know Americans will make you take drugs? Huh? Yeah and they will make you have sex, join a gang, and drink alcohol. Where did you hear that sweety? I learned about it in school today. [no not from the other kids, from the staff in formal instruction] What else did you learn about America honey? bla bla bla [Very excited about all the propaganda she learned today] Did you know you were born in America? I was??? Oh yes...Hmmmm. Do you know where America is sweety? ummm (pause) You are in America right now. What?? ... [looking a little worried] Yes this is America. You've never lived anywhere but in America ... You are an American? No wait ... what? A long parental lecture followed about the freedoms and protections an American can count on, specifically including protections from being forced to do the things described above, and several remediative discussions as time passed, and following that episode registration for a different school. This is an absolutely true accounting of a conversation I had with my daughter a few years ago. Similar conversations have occurred, which were initiated when she shared a comment she heard about white people.
