Europeans are generally to the left of Americans. What's considered "conservative" in Europe is "moderate" in America.

They weren't talking ideology but I suspect you knew that. They were talking about the behavior of the party itself.

And frankly, I don't get why we have a party like the current GOP......what is wrong with Americans that a sizable minority of them thinks the GOP is a good thing?

Ask yourself what is wrong with Americans that a sizable minority of them thinks the Democrats are a good thing.

I can admit that I have problems with Dems and even cite complaints but you don't dare to criticize the Rs.

Well, dude, the GOP is seriously messed up whether you are willing to acknowledge that fact or not.
