Germans believe they're becoming
dumber

BONN (Reuters) - The vast majority of Germans believe they are
becoming dumber, according to a survey of 18,000 television viewers
by a German network Wednesday.

The survey by RTL television was made in response to a speech in
Berlin Wednesday by President Roman Herzog, who said the
country's education was faltering and needed to be reformed.

"Are we Germans getting dumber?" RTL asked its viewers on its
mid-day news program.

An overwhelming majority of 89.4 percent of the 18,063 viewers
who responded by calling the "yes" telephone number compared to
10.6 percent who called the "no" number.

"The result is surprisingly clear," said Matthias Bolhoefer, a
spokesman for RTL in Cologne. "The question posed was completely
serious and the answers were also serious."

He said the figures suggested most Germans agreed with Herzog that
the quality and standards of education in Germany had declined
sharply in recent years.

Herzog said the country's education badly needed a thorough
overhaul and cosmetic corrections would no longer be enough to
repair the system. He said schools and universities needed to work
harder to prepare their students for the real world. REUTERS
