Link Between Times Sq. Bomber and Pakistani Taliban Questioned

The McClatchy Newspapers reports Pakistani investigators have been unable to find evidence linking Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square bombing suspect, with the Pakistani Taliban or other militant groups. On Sunday, US Attorney General Eric Holder said the Pakistani Taliban were “intimately involved” in the attempted blast. But several US officials have questioned Holder’s statement. Last week Gen. David Petraeus described Shahzad as a “lone wolf” who was “inspired by militants in Pakistan but didn’t have direct contact with them.” McClatchy reported last week that six US officials had said there was no credible evidence that Shahzad received serious terrorist training from the Pakistani Taliban or another radical Islamic group. The inept construction of the failed bomb also raised doubts over whether the Pakistani Taliban could have trained Shahzad. Meanwhile, the Washington Independent reports members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence recently received a classified briefing on the attempted car bombing. After the meeting, members said there was not yet definitive evidence tying the Pakistani Taliban to the attack.
