One interesting note on "DIVX", if I remember correctly the disks would be programed to play for only 48 hours from the purchase time, after which they would no longer work, and the consumer would throw them away. I don't know if DVD's could be programed to do this, but if this were eventually to become the standard, it would put the video stores out of business as the disks could be sold anywhere, grocery, convience stores, without the need to return them.
