An atheist knows exactly what he/she is. Because it is not a default of anything. It is a conclusion based usually on years of study and contemplation. Often, it is former preachers and church leaders who finally realized that their dogma was insupportable and there was n o evidence for a god.

If a Mexican says he is RC because "he doesn't know what else to say" then he sure as Hell is not an atheist! He might be irreligious but that is another matter. Atheism is a philosophical stance and position and it is not usually taken lightly but only after intense study and thought.

Almost everyone is indoctrinated in some religion or another. The demographics show this very plainly. To have the courage to leave the "faith of your fathers" usually entails immense thought.
