Personally, I don't care about the pigeonhole you want to put a policy. What I care about is whether or not it works. That's what a lot of people care about. The problem is that you can't easily divorce "what works", from ideology. I'm not talking about ideological biasing the picture people have of reality, and making them see the things that fit with their ideology as working, whatever the actual results are (although this bias is a factor as well), but rather the decision about what results would count as "working". Two different people could get past their bias enough to accept the facts of the situation as being the same, with one of them considering the situation works very well, and the other disagreeing.
