Every extremist in history has found an extremist in some other camp to use as a justification (in their own minds) for their extreme behavior. Alighieri, fell back on that one last week as an excuse for his unjustified mischaracterisation of all conservatives as phoney moralizers. He justified that by claiming conservatives have done the same wrt people living 'alternative' lifestyles. He found one instance of a person who is a moralizer against gay lifestyle, who is also being accused of being a closet gay himself.
