These austerity measures are not growth plans. They are not designed to help countries grow their way out of the problem.

In the long run the lower government spending part of the austerity plans (unless politics pushes the spending cuts to be targeted at the most useful programs while leaving useless or even harmful programs mostly untouched), will help countries grow their way out of their fiscal imbalances. The tax increases, not so much.

Notice that Ireland has the largest deficit, at 14.7%. This is in spite of (or more aptly because of) the enactment of severe austerity measures

"Because of" isn't backed up in the article. Its a rather extreme claim.
