Well, it's my sincere hope that it all gets sorted OK. My view is that the quality of safety awareness in the UK has fallen since the early 1980's. JMHO from listening to how accidents are announced and reported. I found your retired friends comments interesting, not just for BP but for safety standards generally in industry. The human attitude component in safety awareness is crucial. The mean time between failures is a function of how well routine procedures are carried out every day in all areas operated by any company, weather it's just the local bakery or a multinational company engaged in any activity. No magic is involved or necessary (imho).
