Gold mining isn't done with pick and shovel. The Martha Mine in Waihi involves little physical exercise. It's a matter of giant machines and explosives. <Sure you can make cuts and put everyone out of a job, but they will still try and feed themselves somehow. Juries, trials, lawyers, and prisons are very very expensive. We can't send the criminals to Australia any more. Much better and cheaper to have the unemployed dig holes for gold and pay them something for it. Doesn't really matter if they don't find any. >
There is enormous cost in digging the gold out.
It would be better to just give the otherwise unoccupied a job digging holes in the beach and some of the others a job filling them in again.
The amount of gold necessary for teeth and electrical connectors can be produced just like any other material - in the amount and time when the economics justify it.
A gold culture is ridiculous and no better than the old Aztec culture.
It's cheap enough to feed and house people. Just provide a few million stretchers in huge dormitories with tough guy supervisors and cages for the stroppy types. Hose them down once again to keep it clean. Wheat, potatoes, onions, carrots, rice, cabbage are cheap enough.
Those who think the facilities are not good enough can do something shocking, such as get a job. Walking to a job would be better and cheaper exercise than digging gold with a dirty great bucket excavator.
Most so-called "jobs" done by government people would be better not done, or done by somebody else who gives a damn.
Actually, criminals could be sent to Australia and Oz could establish a huge organ harvesting and transplantation business. The top bidders from around the world could travel there for a new lease on life. Unfortunately, crime would drop rapidly and the supply would dry up. Prices would zoom.
Juries, trials, lawyers and prisons are expensive the way they are handled now. Because they did things like that 100 years ago doesn't mean the same absurd processes are required. First, cut the definition of "crime" to exclude all victimless "crimes". Then, make crime very unrewarding, other than via large rewards to people who provide evidence of who dunnit = funded from the sale of body parts. Simpletons would think that people would bear false evidence, but not if that led them to be sold as body parts. The sort of evidence that is indisputable is what matters, such as DNA, physical evidence ["here's the gun that dunnit" and sure enough the bullet fits], video or photographic and other evidence.
Heck, some criminals would have gold teeth bling and that would be worthwhile too.
Just as we didn't accept Adolf's murderous marauders rampaging unimpeded across Europe, we don't have to accept today's criminal marauders mutilating their way around our lives.
